Our Newest Adventure - Meat Rabbits

Updated: Feb 11

I am, by no means, an expert on meat rabbits. While I have raised Jersey Wooly rabbits in the 4H, so far meat rabbits are just different.

I wanted to start a blog post series chronicling our adventures in meat rabbits, the good, the bad and the ugly.

When my husband and I were starting to get serious, I told him I have only a few animals that I would NEVER have as a pet or raise, hamsters, iguanas, Guinea pigs, Ostriches/Emus, and RABBITS. Now I laugh thinking about the almost 30 rabbits we have right now.

To my shock, my husband is the one who wanted to start raising meat rabbits. I'm usually the one begging for some kind of new animal. It took me maybe 24 hours to get on board, I swear my husband could sell cars for a living.

So here we are, almost 6 months into our meat rabbit journey, and it's honestly been the best decision so far. I truly believe rabbits are almost a necessity for any homestead. Not only do they provide a sustainable source of protein, but their manure can also be thrown onto the garden, no composting needed, they provide pelts for projects, as well as dog food.

We've raised Cornish Crosses as well, but in terms of sustainability rabbits have been the best choice.

Stay tuned for updates on our little rabbitry and homestead!
